The pile of grass in my front yard grew big and ugly enough that I felt self-conscious. My yard is a mess, and my neighbors are nervous. I have a small courtyard between my garage and front door where I have decided to stack the grass to get it out of sight from the street until I can get rid of it. I still don’t know how I will get rid of it.
I also still have no actual plan yet for reconstructing the yard, but the picture in my head continues to look very nice.
Here are a couple of photos of the grass extraction so far from the lawn, and the pile, now moved into the courtyard.
I am leaving the tree, making an exception to my “all native plant” theme. It is pretty, and perhaps more significantly it is pretty big.
My big honkin’ grass pile that all our friends and relatives will get to walk past when they come over for Thanksgiving dinner, aka “Fall Decor”:

What about composting the grass? Ideally this would require a plastic enclosure (probably way too big and expensive for this amount of grass) but I think you can probably achieve the same effect by simply connecting (maybe even just tying) together planks of wood into a sort of pen to hold the pile. We have both kinds of composters in our garden and the low-tech version takes a while longer, but it works. This will hide the grass — somewhat — but also produce potting soil for indoor plants. If the compost qualifies as mulch under the terms of the Roseville program, that’s one less item to buy.
Comment by Brian Ballek January 9, 2009 @ 9:36 pmActually, I think it is already composting whether I like it or not. However, I still do not need four tons of compost. Maybe if I compost it though I can get someone to take it willingly as “free fertilizer”! Kind of back to the lawn in the Zip-loc principle. Hmmm…
Comment by dadgeorge January 9, 2009 @ 10:02 pmI think I have an even sillier idea, to be filed under “so crazy, it just might work!”…auction the mound up on eBay. Seriously. I once had about 100 kilos of hideously ugly cement blocks that had once been part of our terrace but were removed to free up space for a flower bed. I put them up on eBay “for pick up only”. And sure enough, the guy came to my house, took the blocks and tossed the winning bid (2 Euros but I couldn’t have cared less) into my mail slot. Voila! FREE HAULING!
Comment by Brian Ballek January 12, 2009 @ 8:14 pmI absolutely never would have though of that, but I like it! “Big pile of mostly clean dirt and sod, with lots of earthworms in it.” I’ll let you know when I get it posted, so you can bid.
