I absolutely never would have though of that, but I like it! "Big pile of mostly clean dirt and sod, with lots of earthworms in it." I'll let you know when I get it posted, so you can bid. :-)

I think I have an even sillier idea, to be filed under "so crazy, it just might work!"...auction the mound up on eBay. Seriously. I once had about 100 kilos of hideously ugly cement blocks that had once been part of our terrace but were removed to free up space for a flower bed. I put them up on eBay "for pick up only". And sure enough, the guy came to my house, took the blocks and tossed the winning bid (2 Euros but I couldn't have cared less) into my mail slot. Voila! FREE HAULING!

Yeah, I'm not sure your daughters are quite as keen to become environmental plant specialists as you are.

Go David! I, too, would never argue with a man with a pickaxe. But I like that you are challenging assumptions about what we all need to "maintain property values" and I have no doubt that your final results--eventually--will be worth it.

Actually, I think it is already composting whether I like it or not. However, I still do not need four tons of compost. Maybe if I compost it though I can get someone to take it willingly as "free fertilizer"! Kind of back to the lawn in the Zip-loc principle. Hmmm...

What about composting the grass? Ideally this would require a plastic enclosure (probably way too big and expensive for this amount of grass) but I think you can probably achieve the same effect by simply connecting (maybe even just tying) together planks of wood into a sort of pen to hold the pile. We have both kinds of composters in our garden and the low-tech version takes a while longer, but it works. This will hide the grass -- somewhat -- but also produce potting soil for indoor plants. If the compost qualifies as mulch under the terms of the Roseville program, that's one less item to buy.
